A few weeks ago, I finished reading Bob Pritchett’s Fire Someone Today and starting putting the advice to good use. I setup a separate account to track all the GST money I’m going to own the government come June. The chapter, “Don’t Hire Anyone You Haven’t Interviewed” was in lighting and interesting from a few viewpoints. I’ve had to hire people over the years, but usually the candidates where chosen and I got to make the final decision at best.
However, I get to make my first hiring decision this week and this chapter is going to be re-read for last minute advice. I want to make sure I hire someone that wants the job, but doesn’t need the job. The candidate seemed really cool and wanted the job to gain experience and learn more, which is what I love to hear next to this is my dream job, of course.
Bob also keeps a blog going, and is a fun read, when he gets to posting.

Over the last few months I’ve been listening intently to David Maister’s Business Masterclass. He provides insightful and yet, almost common sense knowledge on how to improve your life both personal and professional. His personal life experiences combined with his knowledge makes each podcast practical.
Leading business author, global consultant and former Harvard Business School professor David Maister presents career-spanning insights on managing, strategy, client relations and careers in this series of advanced seminars on professional business principles.
I enjoy how he covers a range of business areas and not just marketing, finance or business development. Plus he has a nice voice to listen to. There have been more then a few I’ve not kept up with due to the voice of the person. I highly recommend everyone listen to a few of his podcasts and become inspired. Think of it as a weekly 30 minute class style lecture, which you would enjoy going too.

Major Nelson, also known as Larry Hryb, at Microsoft is reporting that
…the main image used on Sony’s PSP Connect site to promote the Gran Turismo HD Preview was stolen borrowed from the Xbox 360 title Project Gotham Racing 3.
You can track all the websites talking about this on Tailrank. This won’t make as much press as Sony’s flog from last year. However, it’s not helping their reputation online or offline, which is going downhill faster then a bobsled team from Greenland. What were you thinking Sony? Oh wait, you weren’t.

CNNMoney.com has the 101 Dumbest Moments in Business, which includes Sony’s PSP advertisement campaign.
Sony runs a billboard campaign in the Netherlands depicting a Caucasian model rudely gripping the jaw of a woman of African descent to promote its PlayStation Portable in “ceramic white.”
Sony initially defends the campaign, saying it was meant to “highlight the whiteness of the new model,” but later apologizes.
This campaign along with Sony’s flog last year, only shows some of the bad missteps they have taken over the last few years. However, many still feel they’ll win out in market share for their new console in a few years. NexGenWars.com might disagree with that.

It’s great to see Red Herring magazine get into covering the game industry. This can only help move the industry into more of the mainstream.
