Twitter: Marketing to the Masses

20 06 2007

Twitter boxTwitter has been on my mind a lot lately. At first I didn’t get Twitter or Jaiku, but once I signed up and started using the service things changed. Even thought the usually answered question is “What are you doing?”, I found I needed to look beyond that to see past the forest. I now view Twitter as a communication & notification tool more then anything.

Brand Autopsy has a quick piece on Twittering Daily Specials, which shows a funky way a New York restaurant is using Twitter and at the same time building a local community. I think the key to using Twitter from a marketing/advertising perspective is to think about it as a community tool. The question could be “What would my community want to know”, which could be the following:

  1. When the newest shipments of Nintendo Wii’s arrive
  2. When your latest podcast or video goes live
  3. Notification tool as part of an ARG
  4. Use it to receive questions for a podcast or live Q&A
  5. Notification tool for schedule changes at an event

How you can use Twitter or Jaiku to communicate and build a community around your product/brand is limitless, as long as you forget “What are you doing?”.

Halo 3 goes Viral

19 06 2007

GamesIndustry.com is reporting that the marketing campaign for Halo 3 is getting underway.

“‘Iris’ is a spiral campaign designed to take gamers on an incredible journey through the Halo universe,” he stated.

“Led by an ‘unknown’ hand, users will discover bits of previously unknown information about the Halos, the Flood, the Forerunners, and the true origins behind the Halo trilogy.”

The first two campaigns for Halo trilogy were beyond what we would called traditional marketing. Alternate reality gaming is changing how traditional marketing is done in video games. It’s adding a very social aspect to the over arching campaign. It’ll will be interesting to watch this campaign as it reaches launch day for Halo 3.

Sony Playstation Joins the Party

12 06 2007

After a few false starts and a semi-official blog. Sony comes out with a Playstation blog. The new job has meant a lack of posting as I’ve been focusing most of my energy there. I’ll be back to my normal posting rate starting on Monday.
