Why Launching a Brand on Facebook is like Gardening Part 1

19 07 2007

After being sick last week and having a great deal of quality time to let my thoughts bubble over. I’ve come back to this one metaphor “to succeed on Facebook with your social media goals, you’ve to treat your project like a garden”. BTW, I think this goes for online worlds like Second Life as well, especial after the recent article in the LA Times this past weekend.

I’m no gardener, however, my mom is and if there is one thing I’ve learned, it is that you can’t just forgot to toil away at your garden and hope that it prospers for the Spring season. You need to tended to it at least a couple, if not 4 or 5 times, during the week. You need to keep a constant eye on everything and notice any slight change in your environment. You need to keep adding new reasons for the plants to grow and thrive in their environment. You need to make sure your plants can co-habitat with each other.

All these gardening tips apply to Facebook and other online destinations. If you think you can just walk in there and own the place, you are wrong. Facebook is the new operating system for many peoples lives, including my own. You can build it but it doesn’t mean we’ll stick around to play. We’ve options and we’ll exercise our rights to try something else. Tomorrow I’ll go into each of my tips and how it applies to launching your brand within Facebook. iLike wasn’t a fluke, it was planned.
