Facebook: The Next Social Gaming Platform Part 6
22 08 2007Sorry this is a little later then I thought it would be. As I wrap up this feature series and look back on what I’ve learned, conceived and come to the conclusion on,.. it’s pretty interesting. It’s also helped me take more initiative at my day job where I work with such a forward thinking group of people at an ad agency.
Everything I said over the last few weeks holds more true today then it did back then. Also there is more opportunity then I had originally thought there was. Especially after reading Facebook debunked by guest columnist Kevin Barenblat over at VentureBeat. Plus some of the stats from Facebook, from a Canadian perspective, are really encouraging:
- 5 of Top 10 cities are in Canada
- Toronto 2rd largest city on Facebook: 700,000 + members
- 61% are outside of the 18 – 24 year old demo
- 75% are active users (ie log on at least once a month)
- 150,000 new users sign up daily
- 33+ million users
- 15 billion page views/month
- Roughly 10% of users on Facebook are Canadian

If you are going to make a game for Facebook then do keep in mind it has to be as social and interactive as possible. If you use Kongregate or not is up to you, and only you’ll know if that is something you’ll want to do. As I said, Facebook has all the piece; community, money and infrastructure, to become the next social gaming platform with a global users base. The only thing missing now is the game with community approach and enough variety to keep people coming back. The games on Facebook are very basic right now and there is room for someone to raise the bar about what is possible. Who knows maybe you could become the Google of social gaming on Facebook.

[…] In this series of blog posts, I will address the key elements that are positioning Facebook to become the next social gaming platform; community, infrastructure, and money. In the final part of this series, I’ll look at Kongregate as well as what a killer gaming applications might look like. I’ll be doing a separate review on Kongregate down the road, however, it’s something I felt compelled to look at while writing this feature. I think Kongregate has all the factors that the final part in this series mentions to become the leader in social gaming on Facebook. Who knows, maybe Facebook is already thinking about this for their next update and plan to launch a social game.
